Audio limiting is the art of manipulating and controlling audio energy. Often the goal is to increase loudness by changing the level dynamics in the most transparent way. Historically, this was done with an electrical circuit that followed the envelope of the audio signal and directed variable gain to reduce peaks and boost lows. Later, these techniques were carried over to the digital domain, and many variations and flavors have been created since then.
LimitOne is different. Our goal was not to eliminate all other clippers or limiters, since they all add their own color, but to develop a new approach and do things differently, allowing you to achieve results that were previously impossible.
We found inspiration in the methods of two-stage limiters and multi-band compressors, in the way clipping adds color and pressure, and also looked at the problems and artifacts that some types of processing introduce.
Then we imagined what an easy-to-use tool would look like if we weren’t limited by existing methods. This led to the idea of creating a hybrid algorithm that combines the advantages of digital signal processing in the frequency and time domains.
