Our RZ062 EQ plugin is one of the most unique equalizer plugins on the market today. We modeled the plugin on the Klangfilm KL-RZ062 equalizer, developed in the 1960’s, which was a fundamental part of any mixing console and was used on numerous albums and singles recorded in Europe (mostly Germany) during the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. We were lucky enough to find the original unit, disassemble it, carefully measure and reproduce the complex (200+ components!) circuit, and translate it into a plugin form with its distinctive features such as tube saturation and an overall improved user experience.

Distinguishing Features

The plugin comes in two popular versions, which feature standard bass, mid, and treble controls with a few twists. The Bass knobs adjust frequencies from 40Hz to 1kHz, where you can add +12dB of boost and reduce -20dB of gain. The Treble knob adjusts frequencies from 1kHz to 10kHz, where you can add +12dB of boost or reduce -18dB of gain.
The most significant difference between the versions is the midrange knob. In version A, the frequency is fixed at 650Hz, and the entire frequency spectrum rotates around it – so as the bass is boosted, the treble gets lower, and vice versa. Version B replaces the midrange knob with a presence filter. With this knob, you can boost four frequencies: 1.4kHz, 2kHz, 2.8kHz, and 4kHz, with a maximum boost of 4.8dB for each frequency, with six 0.8dB gain steps.
Both versions include input and output level controls (something the original obviously didn’t have) and a variety of stereo imaging options. Mid/Side processing affects the middle and sides of the stereo image separately, allowing you to create an exciting, full-bodied master. The Left/Right control allows you to control each end of the spectrum independently or equally, depending on whether you choose to link them.
The most noticeable feature of this EQ is the simulated tube saturation found in analog gear. Balancing the input and output controls allows you to achieve a beautiful, full sound without clipping the signal. For this reason, the RZ is much more than just an EQ. It allows you to color your instrumental, vocal or mix and master tracks in the most effective and subtle ways to achieve the analog warmth that modern producers are looking for in these days of digital mixing. Whether you want to add extra bass, treble and presence, or improve the overall smoothness, warmth and density of your tracks, the RZ062 can do it all!

Recreating the Magic

Designed in Germany almost 60 years ago, the RZ062 equalizers were created for mixing consoles along with the U73B compressor (which we have also recreated as a plugin – CLICK HERE TO LEARN MORE) and other valve-based modules. European studios used them to adjust frequency response and reduce unwanted studio acoustics. However, their complex valve circuits offer something even more valuable: subtle sound coloration that is highly prized in modern recording projects.
To create the RZ062, we had to carefully emulate over 200 circuit components. These high-precision analog circuits are what made the original devices so special – and thanks to our hardware and modeling know-how, the plugin is just as special.
